Scott “The Protester” Largent was a business owner in Silicon Valley that fell on hard financial times and ended up living on the streets. He was arrested in front of the San Jose Police Department just weeks before Christmas, Santa hat and all, because he had taken recent grievances to the city sidewalk to civilly and peacefully protest the illegal confiscation of his personal property, namely a 30 foot motorhome which he called home. Largent exhausted any and all attempts to have a proper fact-finding investigation by the City of San Jose into why he could not obtain his belongings after his motorhome was taken by Courtesy / Matos Towing per the city towing contract. Everything Mr. Largent worked his entire life for was organized and stored in his motor home including his father’s ashes and his entire family history. On December 29th, 2015, San Jose Police responded to a “Call for Service” regarding Mr. Largent’s motorhome and issued him a 72-hour notice to move it. Mr. Largent provided SJPD with the proper documentation with his temporary operating permit (Ca. Document REG. 172 / REV. 9/2011) he was issued by the San Jose PD (Document 200-27A. 05/10) with the understanding that he had 72 hours to move his motor home. San Jose Police returned several hours later and detained Mr. Largent placing him in a patrol car as they illegally searched his motor home for hours without his permission or a valid warrant. More and more officers arrived and proceeded to attempt to incriminate Mr. Largent and get some type of confession using recording equipment since chest cameras where not rolled out at the time. San Jose Police report # SJ 2015-153630545 said nothing about Mr. Largent having his motor home searched and left out any and all details pertaining to this illegal search. This police report only included one officer’s (Officer Steven Goanna Badge# 4416) statement conveniently leaving out all the other officers that searched and or interrogated Mr. Largent. Standard procedure for calling in a 72-hour notice and also filling out a CHP 180 forms were not followed. A proper inventory was never conducted and Mr. Largent was never able to retrieve his motorhome or personal property including his wallet and DMV folder for his vehicle. His dog was traumatized and sent to animal control and his cat was left to roam the streets. Mr. Largent was booked into the Santa Clara County jail and the charges have been dismissed. Mr. Largent fought and fought to obtain his property only to be sent in circles by the police department and the city’s Code Enforcement Department. An internal affairs case was opened along with an oversight complaint with the Independent Police Auditor. These agencies played “Hot Potato” with Mr. Largent’s complaints and provided no discipline for the officers involved. Hundreds of attempts were made to rectify this situation through the proper channels only to realize this is a common practice for the City of San Jose to “asset strip” the poor of their belongings. Mr. Largent spoke at hundreds of local government meetings regarding these disgusting practices only to be lied to about an investigation being launched. Mr. Largent proceeded to do his own investigation exposing state and local muni codes being violated by the contracted city tow companies. The city just didn’t care and this was also the case with the “Upper Brass” of the San Jose Police Department. Time and time again Mr. Largent was told an investigation would be launched and it never materialized. In the videos provided by Mr. Largent, San Jose police officers wearing 9 chest cameras, illegally detained him, searched him without any legal justification, and proceeded to arrest and book him for protesting on December 21, 2016. While Mr. Largent was detained in the back of a police car, numerous San Jose Police officers conspired as to what charge to arrest Mr. Largent for, or how to ensure that he would be deprived of his liberty. They also seized his two cell phones and megaphone for over 60 days. Several notations on the charging documents stated a “likelihood of reoccurrence” ensuring that Largent would have bail applied and stay in jail until his arraignment. Another trick used by law enforcement to silence political dissent. This arrest should have been a “cite and release” with a ticket and a court date. It was not a bookable offense by any means. Within these chest cameras videos, obtained by Mr. Largent’s legal team, you can see these officers trying to figure out a way to “teach Mr. Largent a lesson” and book him into jail rather than address the main reason for him protesting police headquarters. These officers proceeded to fabricate stories about Largent’s mental health, his current living situation, his financial situation, and also accused him of a burglary (Penal code 459) that he had nothing to do with. To this date, Mr. Largent has no convictions and is not on probation or parole.
