This video was filmed prior to chest cameras being rolled out at San Jose Police Department. Some of my comments were not very appropriate, and I apologize, but I have a heart for the homeless. Witnessing this arrest makes me nervous. Rather than stuffing this elderly man into a scary police car, law enforcement needs to work on their communication skills and attempt to have a normal conversation with him. Only then can they properly assess the situation. The officers need to ask how he is doing and treat him like a human being, not an animal. Animal control would have done a better job calming him down! This man could very well be really nice and just confused. Maybe he is lost and just needs some directions. Why not call a cab or an Uber to take this man home? Maybe sit down with him or grab a cup of coffee across the street at Starbucks. This man is someone’s family. He may have medical issues like dementia. He could have run off from his caretaker and needs help finding his way home, not finding his way to the pokey! Maybe he just needs a SMILE to help him calm down. Unfortunately, this manner of crisis management is starting to become the norm in our city. Law enforcement is failing the people that have it the hardest. This is shameful conduct and must change. As a community, we must start treating others like we would wish to be treated ourselves…The Golden Rule.
